It was a sunny day as we set out on our biggest adventure under the Push Adventures banner. There were butterflies of excitement in our stomachs as the much anticipated surf lesson and media opportunity was upon us. But this is what it’s all about isn’t?!
Creating opportunities not ordinarily thought possible? Well this was a day of new possibilities as the surf experience with Middleton’s Surf and Sun was a lot of fun and definitely pushed us out of our comfort zone.
Enjoying the beach when you use a wheelchair is not easy, but thanks to the attitude of Luke and Gary from the surf school, it was easy! And this is goal, enabling tourism operators to identify and reduce the barriers that can stop people from participating in an experience. In this case getting onto the sand and then into the water was an obstacle, but with a simple carrier mat they were able to carry Scott in. Sure this would not suit everyone, but by providing useful visitor information and a welcoming attitude they were able to work with Scott’s ability to create a memorable experience.
And the best part, Scott and I were able to participate together, we weren’t separated due to our different abilities.
Thanks again to Luke Talbot-Male from Surf and Sun and Rhiannon Elston SBS World News for creating and capturing such an awesome experience!
